Overcoming The World

Leader’s Sheet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7.45pm-9.30pm

WELCOME (15mins): Warmly welcome everyone, introducing newcomers.

Write down acts of ‘worldliness’ on cards (as many as there

Are members present) and give on card to each person.

Each person must describe their act of worldliness without

Using any of the words on the card or they are out (leader will be

Judge).  The rest must guess what it is.

Eg. Watching too much TV, Drinking too much alcohol, Telling

Dirty jokes with non Christian friends etc….

WORSHIP (30 mins): Ask the worship leader to choose songs on living above the world

Eg. It’s no longer I that Liveth, My Life is in You Lord,

When I look into Your holiness, O Lord You’re Beautiful.

WORD      (45 mins) : Read through the material together - the facilitator can ask

different individuals to read different sections and relevant

                                    verses. Follow any given instructions.

After each point allow a discussion time asking individuals

to share their own experiences, problems etc.

This should lead to a time of praying for individuals as the Lord

                                    Leads.

WORKS     (15mins): The last 15 mins are the most importance ones! Take time

Praying for non-believers and people with problems. Pray for any

Church events that are forthcoming (evangelistic or otherwise).

OVERCOMERS –PART TWO

Overcoming the World

Member’s Sheet

Read together …“In the New Testament there are three basic words that are translated as “world”. They have a variety of meanings, but together they mean: “the systematic and organized opposition of men during this lifetime against the will and rule of God”. In other words the world is the exact opposite to God’s Kingdom.”

What is the power behind the course of this world ? (Read James 4:4)

If we love the world what will be missing from our lives ? (Read 1 John 2:15)

What is going to happen to the course of this world ? (Read 1 John 2:17)

Who will abide forever ? ( Read 1 John 2:17)

Why did Demas forsake Paul and the Gospel ? (2 Timothy 4:10)

One person read…”It is not possible to serve two masters – both God and Satan seek to influence our will and shape our character. God uses the Holy Spirit to conform us to the image of Jesus. Satan uses the world and attempts to fit us into it’s mould and ideas. This is why friendship with the world is enmity with God – it pulls us away from Him into the mould of Satan. The pressure Satan uses to pour his image into us is the pressure of conformity.”

What must we continually do to avoid conformity to the world ? (Read Rom 12:1 and 2)

Why did Jesus die for us ? (Read Galatians 1:4)

One person read…The word “church” is from the Greek word “ecclesia” meaning “called out” ones. God has called us out of this world system. And yet He does not take us literally out of the world, but leaves us in it. “We can be in the world though not of the world”.

How are we to live in this present world ? (Read Titus 2:12)

What kind of reaction from the world can we expect for being different ? (Read John 15:18-19)

Read together ….Jesus died in order that He might set us free from this present world which is destined to conform to the image of Satan. If we stop there this is only negative. But we have not just been saved from something but for something great.

What have we been saved for ? (Read Romans 8:29)

One person read…This is what we call sanctification which means “to be set apart for God”. In the Old Testament an ordinary vessel could become a sanctified vessel simply by setting it apart for God. An ordinary building could become a sanctified building by setting it apart for God. An ordinary day could become a sanctified day by setting it apart for God. In the New Covenant Age, in which we live, God is not interested in sanctifying things, but people. We, ordinary people, have been set apart from this evil age to enjoy God’s fullness and presence. As He makes us more like Himself, so the more we feel at home with Him.

God uses various means to separate us to Himself. Give one person one of the following verses to say what one of the means God uses is (as is seen in their passage/s of Scripture)…. (1) Hebrews 13:12; (2) John 17:17 and Ephesians 5:25-27; (3) 2 Peter 3:11 and 1 John 3:3; (4) Psalm 51:3; (5) Proverbs 13:20; (6) Hebrews 12:9-10

What part of our lives does God want to sanctify ? (Read 1 Thessalonians 5:23) – End by praying for each other to be more separated/ consecrated to the Lord.
