OVERCOMERS –PART FOUR
Overcoming Financial
Bondage
Member’s
Sheet
Read together – Matthew
19:16-26
Discipleship extends to
financial stewardship. God longs to bless us financially (read 3 John 2) but
does not want us to covet money (read 1 Timothy 6:10). He will allow us to have
as much as He sees fit at any particular time.
Why does He want to bless us
financially ? Read Genesis 13:1-3 and 2 Corinthians 9:8 – Discuss.
To be blessed financially we
must follow Biblical laws concerning finance.
LAW 1: Read Proverbs 22:7 and Romans 13:8. What are we to
be free from ? Why ? Discuss.
LAW 2: Read 1 Timothy 6:8; Philippians 4:11 and Hebrews
13:5 – What is the common principle
Concerning finance we find
here.
Read Also Matthew 6:33 and
comment of it’s meaning.
LAW 3: Read Proverbs 11:24-25; 19:17; 28:27 and Luke 6:38
– What is the principle in these verses ? Discuss. Give testimonies if you have
lived in the reality of these verses.
When we give how will we
receive back ? Discuss (Read Matthew 6:19-20; Philippians 4:17).
Tithing: Read Proverbs 3:9-10; Genesis 28:22 – What is the Tithe ? Discuss
Was the Tithe only for those
under the Law or is it also for us today ? Discuss (Remember that Abraham was
not under the covenant of Law and he tithed (Read Genesis 4:18-20;28:22) and
Malachi’s instructions on Tithing we not just for the few years that remained
in the Old Testament (Read Malachi 3:8-12)).
Who should the Tithe be
given to ? Read Malachi 3:10 and Numbers 18:21.
Offering: Read 2 Chronicles 31:12 and state how an offering
differs from the tithe. Who or what should offerings be given to and when ?
Discuss.
Alms: Read Acts 24:17 – What does the term ‘Alms’ mean
? Discuss.
Read the following together:
‘Alms’ comes from the Greek word meaning ‘compassion’ – this is living the principle of the Cross and speaks of a quality of living which reflects the nature of God. The Father loved to give all things to the Son. Jesus laid down His life for the world. In so doing He gained an everlasting Kingdom which He will one day give back to the Father God desires to have a family that reflects His nature. It is the way of the Cross, the way of compassion, the way of sacrifice. Man , in his fallen nature is like a flower closed up in bud. His heart is contracted and inward looking. But the Cross of Jesus opens up the heart, expands it and causes it to reach out to others. The Christian life can be summed up in one word – it is a life of giving (Acts 20:35).
Ask each person to say what
the above paragraph means to them and how much of a giver they are – this
should lead into a time of praying for each other. If there are those with
financial problems pray for them to be more giving and release blessing into
their lives.
