Shortest War
For those who think the coalition troops of Operation Desert Storm must have set some kind of record with their 100-hour ground assault against Iraq, the record book of history says otherwise. The shortest war on record was fought between Britain and Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania) on August 27, 1896. The huge British fleet issued an ultimatum to the sultan of Zanzibar, then followed with 38 minutes of bombardment before the badly mismatched sultan surrendered!

Walk
I said: Let me walk in the field. God said: Nay, walk in the town. I said: There are no flowers there. He said: No flowers, but a crown.
I said: But the sky is black, there is Nothing but noise and din. But He wept as He sent me back, There is more, He said. There is sin.
I said: But the air is thick, and fogs are veiling the sun. He answered: Yet souls are sick, and souls in the dark undone.
I said: I shall miss the light, and friends will miss me, they say. He answered me: Choose tonight, if I am to miss you, or they.
I pleaded for time to be given; He said: Is it hard to decide? It will not seem hard in heaven to have Followed the steps of your Guide.
I cast one look at the fields, Then set my face to the town; He said: My child, do you yeild? Will You leave the flowers for the crown?
Then into His hand went mine, And into my heart came He; And I walk in a light Divine, The path I had feared to see.
- George MacDonald
Believe and Belong
Bruce Larson, in BELIEVE AND BELONG, tells how he helped people struggling to surrender their lives to Christ: For many years I worked in New York City and counseled at my office any number of people who were wrestling with this yes-or-no decision. Often I would suggest they walk with me from my office down to the RCA Building on Fifth Avenue. In the entrance of that building is a gigantic statue of Atlas, a beautifully-proportioned man who, with all his muscles straining, is holding the world upon his shoulders. There he is, the most powerfully-built man in the world, and he can barely stand up under this burden. Now thats one way to live, I would point out to my companion, trying to carry the world on your shoulders. But now come across the street with me. On the other side of Fifth Avenue is Saint Patricks Cathedral, and there behind the high altar is a little shrine of the boy Jesus, perhaps eight or nine years old, and with no effort he is holding the world in one hand. My point was illustrated graphically.
We have a choice. We can carry the world on our shoulders, or we can say, I give up, Lord; heres my life. I give you my world, the whole world.
Richard A. Hasler
Chists Plan for Me
When I stand at the judgment seat of Christ And He shows me His plan for me; The plan of my life as it might have been Had He had His way, and I see.
How I blocked Him here and I checked Him there And I would not yield my will, Shall I see grief in my Saviors eyes; Grief though He loves me still?
Oh, Hed have me rich, and I stand there poor, Stripped of all but His grace, While my memory runs like a hunted thing Down the paths I cant retrace.
Then my desolate heart will well-nigh break With tears that I cannot shed. Ill cover my face with my empty hands And bow my uncrowned head.
No. Lord of the years that are left to me I yield them to Thy hand. Take me, make me, mold me To the pattern Thou hast planned.
