Self-control, not given to sudden impulses or excesses <1 Tim. 2:9>. Although the term rarely occurs in the Bible, the concept of moderation is common. The Pharisees were not moderate. Jesus described them as those "who strain out a gnat to swallow a camel" (from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary)

TEMPERANCE
Control over sensual desires. The meaning of the word temperate in English translations of the Bible should not be restricted to the kind of self-control a person exerts by abstaining from alcoholic beverages. The temperance of which the Bible speaks is far more inclusive. It indicates a self-control that masters all kinds of sensual desires, such as sexual desire or the desire for material comfort. Through temperance the Christian disciplines body and spirit, so that he is more capable of striving for his spiritual reward <1 Cor. 9:24-27>.
