SCHISM

A separation or division into factions, especially a break in church fellowship <1 Cor. 12:25>; (discord, RSV; division, NASB, NIV). The apostle Paul was concerned about the divisions within the church at Corinth <1 Cor. 1:10; 11:18>. Jealousy, mistrust, and party strife must be replaced, said Paul, by mutual respect and unity of mind and heart in the Holy Spirit.
