1 Cor 12:1-11

1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

2You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.

3Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

4There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.

6And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

8for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

11But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

It is important to understand the TYPE of GIFTS Paul is referring to here as there are a few different groupings of gifts found in the New Testament. Verse 4-7 list out different terms used for these different gifting groups.

The groupings may be termed:

CALLINGS = Everyone has a particular calling which is strong in one of these areas (may also be termed 'Motivational Giftings').

MINISTRIES = These are the FIVE-FOLD ministries which certain people (not all) are particularly called into in the Church (diakonos)

PHANEROSIS= This is the term used of the main list of gifts in this section and means 'a shining forth' or 'manifestation'. This is the demonstration of the Holy Spirit through us which is given to us at a particular time for a particular purpose.

GRACINGS = These are attributes..character/personality giftings ('Charisma') - may also be termed 'Motivational Giftings'.

The following chart shows how these are given to the Body of Christ - the Church....

Diagram showing the four groupings of giftings and how they are given to us.

We will be concentrating on the gifts called the 'PHANEROSIS' gifts (as mentioned in verse 7) as they are the ones mentioned here. These are the gifts made available to us when we are baptized in the holy spirit. If you want a more detailed assessment of all the gifts then download my teaching package called 'The Big Picture' which takes you through all of them (go to: http://www.timshen.truepath.com/teaching.html ). This teaching looks at Paul's main train of thought concerning the misuse of these gifts and we will not divert from that here.

It's important to see that the PHANEROSIS gifts are the ones used mainly in the assembling of the Church as is the context of 1 Corinthians 12. They are given according to the need of the moment and may be given to any spirit-baptized believer. The BEST GIFT (see 12:31) in any situation may differ but, as we shall see, it is the one most needed for edification at that moment in time.

The diagram on the right shows how these PHANEROSIS gifts work....

This section emphasizes the VARIETY there is in the PHANEROSIS gifts. Paul's main aim is not to describe what these gifts are and do but to show that there must be a variety of Phanerosis gifts displayed in Church gatherings and not an over emphasis on one (Tongues in this case). These gifts are not for show but for a purpose - that of building up His body to the point where it is able to move in His missions purposes. As we will see later, in Church gatherings the one gift that should be displayed the most is Prophecy and we'll see why later.

Now you are ready to go to (ii) SECTION TWO: The Picture Of The Body (12:12-31).
