Lesson Five: Forgiving One Another As God Has Forgiven Us

WELCOME SECTION: Warmly welcome all the people and ask everyone to introduce

 (20 mins)                           Themselves. Ask each person to complete ‘Forgiveness is….’

                                           With their own unique phrase (funny or serious).

 

WORSHIP SECTION  :  The worship leader should select songs about forgiveness….

(30 Mins)                          

                                            Suggested songs are: O Lord Your Tenderness, It’s Your

                                            Blood That Cleanses Me, All Heaven Declares

                                         

                                             Allow for the operation of the gifts (prophecy, new song etc.)

 

WORD SECTION          : The facilitator should take the group through the attached

 (60 mins)                            Lesson. Get different people to read through the sections

                                             and any Bible Verses. Stop to discuss as prompted allowing

                                             everyone to get involved (drawing in the quieter ones). If

                                             the discussion is going off track bring it back to the main

                                             topic. Be conscious of the time and pace yourself.

                                             If there are any practical excercises take time to discuss the

                                             Lessons learnt in conjuction with the lesson theme and don’t

                                             allow  too much wasted time.

 

                                             When you’ve finished the lesson have a time of praying

                                             For the release of forgiveness (as the Lord leads)

 

WORKS SECTION         : Pray outwards for unsaved friends , for your neighbourhoods

  (10 mins)                             to have revival, for Singapore as a whole and even for our

                                              missions work in China etc..and other pressing prayer needs.

                                              Close with offering and benediction. Go and eat…..

Lesson Five: Forgiving One Another As God Has Forgiven Us

Ask different people to read out the following verses and state what pictures God uses to reveal the extent of God’s forgiveness…discuss briefly each one…

Psalm 103:12; Isaiah 38:17; Isaiah 43:25 and Micah 7:19

 

Read Matthew 26:26-28. What price did Jesus pay for our forgiveness ?

 

Read Isaiah 55:6-7. What are the conditions for receiving forgiveness as revealed in this passage ?

 

Read Colossians 3:12-13. Why should we forgive others according to this passage ? Discuss.

Ask the group to list the five qualities given in verse 12 associated with forgiveness and give the meanings in their own words (eg.. Mercy is Undeserved Forgiveness).

 

Ask someone to read Matthew 6: 14-15. What happens if we fail to forgive others ? Discuss.

 

Open you Bible to Matthew Chapter 18.

Read together verse 21. Why do you think Peter asked Jesus this question ?

Read together verse 22. What did Jesus mean by this answer ?

Read together verses 23-28. Discuss what or who is represented by the following (can write each on card and distribute amongst the group) –

The King (v23),

The servant (v24),

10,000 talents (v24),

Cancelling the debt (v28),

The fellow-servant (v28),

100 denarii (v28)

 

What conclusion did Jesus draw from this parable in verse 35 ? Discuss.

 

What three steps did Jesus give in this parable for the dealing with offences ?

Step one is found in verse 15, Step two is found in verse 16 and Step three is found in verse 17.

 

Discuss the following three questions as time allows….

  1. How would you counsel someone who says , “I want to forgive you but I just can’t” ?
  2. What do you do when someone is deliberately taking advantage of your Christian duty to forgive , by persistently offending you ?
  3. What are the consequences when a believer does not forgive another Christian

(a)     For the offended ?

(b)     For the offender ?

(c)     For the fellowship ?

              What are the consequences when a believer does forgive another Christian

(a)     For the offended ?

(b)     For the offender ?

(c)     For the fellowship ?

 

End the time by praying for each other in the light of the above.
