OVERCOMERS –PART
SEVEN
Overcoming
Temptations
Member’s
Sheet
Read together: “Every Christian is tempted. There is
nothing sinful about being tempted. Jesus was tempted. The sin is yielding to
the temptation. Temptation is the knock at the door – sin is opening the door!”
Each Christian has his own weak points that the Devil is
aware of and will concentrate upon during certain ‘seasons of temptation’ – eg.
Jesus was tempted in a concentrated way for a season and then left alone (Read
Luke 4:13). Talk about seasons of temptations you have been through or you know
others have been through.
Read Ephesians 6:13 – what must we do to resist such seasons
or ‘days’ of temptation ? Discuss.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Read 1 Corinthians 10:13 - What statements does this verse
make concerning temptation ? Discuss
Does God promise grace to withstand temptations we
deliberately walk into ? Read James 1:13-15
___________________________________________________________________________________
Read Luke 4:9-12 – On what grounds did Jesus refuse this
particular temptation ? Discuss.
There are certain areas in our lives that we know we cannt
handle and therefore it would be “tempting Providence” to toy around in those
area – can you think of such areas in your own lives ?
___________________________________________________________________________________
Read Genesis 39:7-12 and 2 Samuel 11:1-4 – What can we see
in contrast between Joseph and David? Discuss.
___________________________________________________________________________________
What did Jesus command us to pray in Matthew 6:13, and why ?
Discuss.
Read Romans 7:14-23 and describe the condition of Paul here
– this is the kind of man he was under the law and not under grace (before he
was born again).
In chapters 6 and 8 or Romans Paul describes the Christian
who has come out of the realm of sin and the law and is now under grace. What
are some of the statements he makes in the following verses – 6:1-7; 12-14 and
8:1-4 – discuss the meaning and implications of these verses.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Read together – “When asked the meaning of the word grace
many reply that it is the “unmerited favour of God”. This is true, but
according to Paul, grace is much more than this. When we are under grace we are
not only forgiven for the past, but we are brought into a power that is greater
than sin and the law. It is a power that enables us to reign in life through
righteousness (5:20). The good that we want to do we can do! The evil we do not
want to do we don’t have to do. In other words, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians
10:13, we are not placed under any temptation that will prove too strong for
us. God’s grace is sufficient for us.”
Ask different members to read the following verses and
discuss what they state in relation to the grace of God. How can we release
God’s grace in us in times of temptation ? John 1:16; Romans 4:16;
Romans 5:2 ; Ephesians 2:8 ; James 4:6-8 and 2 Peter 3:18.
How would you counsel a Christian who said they had a
temptation that they were not able to resist ? Discuss.
Finally end the time by each member stating specific
temptations they are now facing and pray for each other to have the grace and
strength to resist and overcome these temptations.
