OVERCOMERS –PART
EIGHT
Member’s
Sheet
Read together: “A
part of the building process which takes part in our lives as Christians is the
restoration of a healthy self image. Satan tries to tear this down by filling
us with a sense of unworthiness. The Holy Spirit, however, is working in us to
produce the feelings of confidence and to reveal to us constantly just who we
are in Christ and how much we have to rejoice is.”
Read Leviticus 19:18
– how much are we told to love others ?
We can only love
others to the extent that we develop a healthy self-esteem which involves at
least….
1. The sense of belonging.
What
has Jesus done to make us feel we belong ? (Read Hebrews 2:11-12).
Discuss how this helps build our self
esteem.
2. The sense of fitting into a particular place.
What
has God prepared for us and when did He prepare these ? (Read Ephesians 2:10)
Discuss
how understanding this enhances our self-esteem.
3. Recognition of team-work.
Read 1 Corinthians 3:8-9 – What does God promise as recognition of our individual contributions and those in relation to others ? Discuss how this boosts out self-image.
4. Value of personal uniqueness.
Read 1 Corinthians 12:18 – How did we come to have the particular role that we have, and be the particular person we are in the body of Christ ? Discuss how this can enhance our self-image.
5. Realiziation that others enjoy us.
Read Revelation 4:11 – why did God create us ?
Say what you enjoy the most about the person sitting on your left.
Read together: “The
building of self-esteem is very complex. Many factors influence it’s formation.
We have just seen the need to know ourselves as wanted and loved. When we
experience a certain degree of success in life this also contributes to a
feeling of self-worth. We need to come to a place where we know that whatever
comes we can handle it. This knowledge comes through repeated experiences of
conquering handicaps, fears and obstacle. “
Several negative
experiences appear to contribute to the feeling of not being wanted, of being a
personal failure or being inadequate to please others. What examples are
mentioned in the following verses ?
1. Read 1 Corinthians 10:12 – What did Paul and his friends avoid
doing ? Why do you think this was ?
2. Read Colossians 3:21 – What is a factor in this verse that
produces low self-esteem ? Discuss.
3. Read Romans 13:7 – What will contribute to a low self-image,
if it is lacking ? Discuss.
4. Read 1 Corinthians 12:25 – Name another negative ingredient
that produces the feeling of unworthiness. Discuss.
A poor self-image can
be corrected. We can unlearn wrong patterns and learn new ones. These are
specific patterns of Christian living that will create in us a healthy
self-respect and realization of personal worth in terms of God’s love. From the
following references, describe ,in one phrase, a positive attribute which builds self-respect….(can give to
certain members to answer for each verse)…
1. 1 Corinthians 4:1-2
2. 1 Peter 5:5
3. Psalms 1:1-2
4. 1 John 3:18-19
