The Dead Sea viewed from Masada. The "Lisan" (tongue) projects from the eastern shore (center left). In ancient times this 2 1/2 mile shallow channel was fordable, providing access to Moab across the sea. The mountains of Moab on the far shore, rise to 3,000 feet above sea level and 4,300 feet above the level of the Dead Sea.
