Israel Sea of Galilee Chorazin

Description:
Columns that supported the roof section in the synagogue at Chorazin. This third or fourth century structure was constructed of the black, basaltic rock abundant locally. (First century Chorazin was located on the north side of the nearby road.)

Closeup of a carving of the pagan sun god, Helios, appears among the ruins of the Chorazin synagogue. This kind of carving, as well as idols found at the site, may point to syncretism that arose within Judaism.

Olive trees grow extensively throughout Galilee. This olive press, found at Chorazin, was used to extract oil from the olives. Olive oil was used for cooking, as fuel for lamps, for medicinal purposes, and for anointing kings.
